Girls Get Active Project

The Limerick Sports Partnership, in association with HERMoves is delighted to announce our ‘Girls Get Active’ Project.

What is ‘Girls Get Active’?

Participating in sport and physical activity provides multiple benefits for physical and mental health, and for potential quality of life. However, women and girls have long been an underrepresented group in sport and teenage girls in particular take part in sport and physical activity far less than the national average in Ireland.

The ‘Girls Get Active’ project aims to develop more relevant and appealing physical activity programmes for teenage girls, by developing initiatives through a teenage girls lens.

Why is this important?

Participating in sport and physical activity provides multiple benefits for physical and mental health, and for potential quality of life. However, women and girls have long been an underrepresented group in sport and teenage girls in particular take part in sport and physical activity far less than the national average in Ireland.

Evidence suggests participation plummets during adolescence with just 7% of girls age 14-15 years meeting recommended physical activity levels. Girls who are active in their teenage years and develop a love of sport are much more likely to establish a life-long relationship with sport and exercise in adulthood.  Adolescence is a critical life-stage and these formative years are when attitudes and behaviours are established that shape the women they will become.

Research shows that if girls enjoy something socially, they will do it more often and stay with it longer. “Something that moves you” – Something that gets your body moving and heart rate going, and more importantly something that you enjoy.

How are we trying to tackle this?

The LSP will run Girls Get Active programmes in various locations across Limerick city and county, offering teenage girls the chance to engage in physical activities within a fun and social environment.  These programmes are designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and will play a pivotal role in a research project aimed at increasing the participation levels of teenage girls in physical activity.  Additionally, the findings from this initiative will inform the development of ongoing programmes focused on contributing to a sustained and positive impact on the wellbeing of teenage girls.

If you are interested in participating in an upcoming ‘Girls Get Active’ programme please check out our current programmes at the bottom of this page.

We are currently running the programme in Limerick City, Cappamore, Kilfinane and Newcastle West.
